AdVerve - Episode 12 - End of Yearness

It’s our end of year madness. While it may be a little pretentious of us to run a year-end episode after only 12 episodes, eh, so what. Some of what makes it into this one are things we never got to cover during previous episodes but which we proudly beat the hell out of now.

We wander everywhere, from music and films to current stories floating around the net. Safe to say, we earn the explicit tag with this show. (Chapter breaks below, a loose guide at best.) Tarantino to Star Trek to Brad Pitt to Facebook sibling revenge sex lists and beyond, the show goes there. We’ve also included links to anything we mentioned throughout.

(Few small clarifications first. In the discussion on Tarantino, even though movies about WWII now are good (Saving Private Ryan, Thin Red Line and Schindler's List), at the time, the acting in all films was melodramatic and sucked. We butchered Javier Bardem’s name and referred to Brad Pitt’s True Romance character as Stoner when we meant Floyd.)

Lastly, and more importantly, thanks to all who downloaded and listened to the show and/or who have given us coverage so far. We could’ve done it without you, but then, it would just be two angry people ranting into a mic... sans audience. And this, well, this would suck.

AdVerve - Episode 11 - The Sexism Song-and-Dance

Play the show now. (Or right-click to download directly.)

Subscribe via iTunes: Bill Green and Angela Natividad - AdVerve - AdVerve

Our extra-special pre-holiday Episode 11 features Åsk Wäppling of Adland.tv, infamously known among ad land old-schoolers as @dabitch.

This week we tackle Sexism™, one of the more obvious "isms" in this fair industry we call advertising.

Having clocked in at a number of European shops and freelanced at some American ones, Åsk gets gritty about why it's tough for women to ask for more money, why breeding potential is an irrational metric for hire and what made method's scrubbing bubbles ad so uncomfortable to watch.

You can read more of Åsk's sexism thoughts on Adland, where she synopsizes a lot of what we discussed, and hammers in points we didn't have time to talk about.

In case you plan to check out early this week, happy holidays and check the shower before stepping into it. If you can, catch our year-end pop culture roundup next week.

We had a new “ism” show scheduled with Ad Broad, but thanks to Skype doing its thang, we had to bail. Instead, we went off the res to wherever recent topical topics we felt like destroying this week.

From French cinema to French nuclear drills. Pervy PSAs to White House party crashers. Yeah. We go there. So that also means due to the last-minute change, there’s no five minutes with... this episode. *cue sorrow*

Movie links mentioned in show include:

AdVerve - Episode 7 - The Thanksgiving show, aka, iGod, Naughty Words and the Poetry of Tila Tequila

Play the show now:

This week's AdVerve is an icon-heavy melange featuring social networks, Oprah, and ... yes, an angry poem by Tila Tequila. (LISTEN TO TILA GET ALL NSFW N’ SHIT!)

First, we kick this week's episode off with an email from Chris, a listener from Japan, whose words of love warmed our figurative cockles. Then, just for sport, Bill suggests Twitter's dying even though he doesn't actually believe it.

We talk Oprah. AS America. Then comes a literary moment featuring our favorite social media photo whore poet and entrepreneur, Tila Tequila. This is followed by some saucy wordplay, featuring trigger words that instantly put people in fight-mode.

You get your five minutes with David Griner, star of AdFreak, The Social Path and Luckie & Co. Steve Jobs (iGod or iDouche?) gets his moment in the sun, and then a treat! — Charlie Bit Me, auto-tuned.

Last but not least, we discuss a weird wave of suicides going down at France Telecom. Not gonna say much about it here; listen to the 'cast, man. But if you read en français, you can get a gist here.

AdVerve - Episode 6 - The French Connection.

Fred. We interview Frédéric-Gérard Leveque for a unique take on the ad scene in Paris and the state of agencies in general.

One point that comes to mind after hearing Fred is that regardless of the solutions he talks about, you realize the problems facing ad agencies in France are things that ad agencies deal with all over the world. WE ARE NOT ALONE.

(BTW, there's a point in the 'cast where we forget the name of a good Swedish agency. Angela says 'Swiss' at the end of the show, but really it's Swedish. The agency we discuss is Farfar.)

Five minutes with... the other half of AdPulp, Danny Goldgeier, or “Danny G,” as he's called on the streets. He talks about getting out of the cubicle a little more. (Check him out on Twitter.)

AdVerve - Episode 5 - Uptown PETA Mix.

10 for 10 is back. (You love it.) We talk sexy burka wearers. Assassin shoes. Grizzly Bear. The children of stars, and more.

Five minutes with... this time out features the rants of The Girl Riot and her inside voice on the mic. Buckle up kids! She gets all into Twitter updates! Bad moves by band members! Weezer Snuggie!

Then we try something new where we take one brand or issue on our minds and come up with a fix for it. That’s part of the advertising world: sometimes, a client lands on your desk and you have no choice but to work on it. The victim this time out? PETA. Buckle up kids is right.

AdVerve - Episode 4 - Trojan wisdom.

It’s a long story. On this, our fourth episode, we discuss about 12 different topics, from reality shows to Facebook moms. Thanks to the 50 people listening, iTunes listed the show as a podcast to watch for in their new releases section. WE WON’T REST ON LAURELS THOUGH. We just won’t. Innovation is our middle name, and we’ll continue to try out different show features. Like? Like including short rants from various ad bloggers we know. (This episode, Jetpacks stops by to vent.) Special thanks to Bob from The Beancast, who bailed us out on the mother of all aural nightmares this past week.

Episode 3 - Socially inept.

And a blog. Yep. Got a place to house the show. While I’ll post new episodes here, they’ll be all in one place there for twice the fun. I said twice.

On this episode, social media gurus, Thought Leaders™ and whatever else you call them. Instead of the established players, we brought in two relatively unknowns to lend a different perspective. Social media strategist Len Kendall from 3six5.com Project joins user experience designer, content strategist and marketing optimization consultant Robert Gorell. Discussion ensues!

Episode 1 - Race in advertising.

Thanks to all who downloaded the first episode of AdVerve with guest Hadji Williams. We had close to 1,700 episodes downloaded so far. Many people emailed Angela and me and expressed support over the way we talked about a subject nobody likes talking about. Thanks also to everyone who dug the show enough to blog about it, Craig, David, David, HighJive and Steve.

(Yes, the audio issues were annoying at times, but after previewing the final version, we all agreed the vibe we had going was going to be hard to repeat, so we ran with it. Lotta shows we listened to make the production thing look easy. After one show, and while I knew it might be some work, I can officially say it, um, takes work. Stay with us though as we move forward and get things tighter.)

As a result of the show, Hadji got a guest stint on Ad Age discussing one of the issues we raised. Unlike most pieces on the topic, the comments were mostly civil. Mostly. (Thanks to Ken Wheaton for making that happen and covering us as well.)

AdVerve part 2.

AdVerve part 1.

AdVerve - Episode 1 - Race and advertising

It’s the topic of our first podcast and it’s a lengthy one for several reasons. Angela and I found a few hours last week to talk with Hadji Williams, ad creative and author of Knock The Hustle. We wanted to give voice to the things many say in comments on diversity articles but are shouted down over. When the only ones doing the talking are giving speeches saying there’s no “there” there, it’s time for a different take. There are a lot of contributing factors that make this issue something that won’t be solved by a Facebook group alone. Apart from the Madison Avenue Project by Washington attorney Cyrus Mehri, there are issues of cultural cluelessness in the actual work itself, the feeding of talent into the pipeline and the involvement of brands.
