AdVerve - 22 - Plagiarism in Advertising

There isn’t any. Nothing more to see here, so move on. We kid! So we finally get to an “ism” episode that we had planned ever since our first show on Racism in advertising. This topic comes up from time to time, but usually only on ad blogs and only by people in the industry. Regular consumers? They could give a shit.

Homage? Tribute? Imitation? A rip? Inspiration? Direct lift? Copycat? Whatever you call it, we discuss all the issues surrounding a touchy subject with copywriter Dan Goldgeier of Partners + Napier. (In addition to being Ad Pulp columnist and regular Talent Zoo columnist, he’s also on Twitter.)

In addition, we go over why plagiarism is different in music, film and fashion. Because there, it’s not *just* plagiarism—it’s an homage, people.

An homage.

*Get it? That was an homage to a Clint Eastwood film. Homage ftw!

AdVerve - Episode 21 - The Death of Media

If newspapers weren’t dead, they are now after we killed them. Well, with a little help from Ben Kunz, director of strategic planning at Mediassociates, the blog Thought Gadgets, as well as a Business Week column. From natural disasters to that 52” HDTV you’re buying this weekend, he helps us deconstruct how media has changed—and the ways it won’t. Newspapers? Meh. Who needs paper with ink smudges anyway. At some point, we manage to drag Twitter into the fray, kicking and screaming.

Bitches, We're a Top 100 Small Business Podcast!

Where in the ranking, we don't know, but we're gonna make like our moms and imagine that the number is 1. (And you're all, "Wait, there are 100 podcasts out there in the world?" YES! There are! And AdVerve's a Top 100 Small Business one!)

Check us out in the "Marketing and Sales" section of the SMB Trendwire list, along with our homies fo' life, Marketing Over Coffee and The BeanCast. Description is refreshingly sparse: "This is a podcast about advertising and marketing." Thanks for noticing, guys. But for those rare few that are all, "INSUFFICIENT DATA," we go by a simple philosophy that leads to a thorny description.

We're about the culture of advertising: the serious stuff, the not-so-serious stuff, the boring stuff and the Gold™. And the culture of advertising draws from everything. So in the lamentable event that you lack an agency water cooler, or just aren't cool enough to stand there, give us a listen and we'll give you the what's-what.

You are jealous, we can smell it, but no worries, we share the wealth. Download our latest episode  (a delectable primer on AD LAW!) directly here. Or subscribe via iTunes: Bill Green and Angela Natividad - AdVerve - AdVerve

AdVerve - Episode 20 - Call 1-800-AD LAW GUY

Have you or a loved one been injured by an ad or TV commercial? Call us. Now! Michael McSunas, @adlawguy on Twitter and a lawyer in real life, joins us for an episode wrought with disclaimer madness.

From images in the public domain, to why you can’t use that song you didn’t pay for, we nail it all. *smacks back of your head* Really? You needed to be told you can’t use that song in your spot without paying?!

We also break down why social media agencies would be advised to call Michael. His firm has him travel around the country and give presentations to ad agencies and brands on what things they might not be aware of when it comes to copyright issues.

(Email Michael for more info: mmcsunas *at* cbslawfirm *dot* com. It’s free for any agency interested. The catch? None. It's a self-promotional tool for his firm. So there.)

DO NOT ADJUST YOUR BLOG—WE ARE IN CONTROL.

We’ve done a little maintenance and now uploaded mp3 versions for all the shows to date. You might see a bunch of previous shows pop up again next time you check iTunes, but those are just the new mp3 versions. (Any existing mp4 versions will be left up for anyone who might have linked directly to them.) Also, each show can now be played directly in posts in addition to downloading them directly.  If you have any problems and clearing your cache/page refresh doesn’t work, just leave us a comment below, email us, or shout at us on Twitter.

AdVerve - Episode 19 - Customer Service-O-Rama

On 3 For 3, we go off on Abbey Road, French Olympics, soy sauce, reality series mania, Dodge Charger ads and YouTube Disco. Then Kelly Eidson of Modea does Five Minutes With... which kicks off a discussion of the small agency digital divide around 33 minutes in. Then the headlining act comes onstage as we discuss Kevin Smith’s recent Southwest airlines fun. (Links below to the sequence of events.) We come out on his side of things and think Southwest is spinning things way too much and is wrong for reasons that the Southwest PR fanboy crowd ignore. Which then leads us into a discussion on the concept of customer service in Europe. And ice cream. Lots of ice cream.

AdVerve - Episode 18 - Super Bowl Jesus

Post-Super Bowl and we only talk about one Super Bowl spot? Sure. Why not. Our show, our rules. From there, things morph into Jesus and how parents make kids go to church, thereby planting the seeds for their future interest in science fiction. Speaking of, prescient that the topic of science friction starts at 25:25. (You figure the ref out.) At least in our cases it did. From there, things devolve further into U.S. imperialism and actors we hate. Mutually exclusive? Could be, could be. Listen for yourselves, then judge, won’t you?
